There are three broad types of inheritance: wealth, character, and memory.
Many of us strive to amass wealth to have comfortable lives on earth and wanting to leave it as inheritance to our family.
I must leave to others everything I have earned. And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2.18-19
We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. Psalm 39.6
However, the other two types of inheritance - character and memory - our children will use and enjoy them for their lifetime.
For the inheritance of character, we ought to build up good character in our children while at the same time, we also must become better and better character to be the role model.
For the inheritance of memory, we ought to spend quality time with our children so they have fond memories of us both when we are alive and after we are gone.
We want our family to be taken care of after we die, but we also ought to trust God that he can take care of our family after we die. “Not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.” Matthew 10.29
So let us be intentional in building up good character and making fond memories with our children.
